Krispy Kreme is rolling out miniature versions of four of their most popular doughnuts as their newest permanent menu item. The North Carolina-based doughnut chain has chosen Original Glazed, Chocolate Iced Glazed, Chocolate Iced with Sprinkles and Strawberry Iced with Sprinkles as the initial flavors for launch.
Krispy Kreme says the intention is to help dieters stay on track with their New Year’s resolutions without feeling guilty about indulging a little. Each of the tiny treats are less than 130 calories, compared to the 190 calories in a standard-sized Original Glazed doughnut.
Dave Skena, Chief Marketing Officer for Krispy Kreme, said in a statement, “Too many people bail on their New Year’s resolutions before they are even halfway through January. That’s no good. Sometimes a mini-indulgence, or cheat, is all you need to help you stick with it. A little Krispy Kreme goes a long way.”
Krispy Kreme is calling the minis their biggest innovation of 2020. Its big innovation for 2019 was their Original Filled Doughnut with different stuffed donuts introduced throughout the year. One was stuffed with Reese’s chocolate peanut butter, while another was filled with a birthday cake-flavored filling.
Bite-sized versions of indulgent desserts has long been a staple of the food industry. Some of the most notable are the mini pies, mini cookies, and mini cinnamon rolls served at a variety of fast food restaurants. Mini donuts appear to be the next step in the trend.
