Pet Food Company Purina Recalls Cat Food over Plastic Contamination Concerns

Nestle-owned Purina PetCare Company has recently issued a recall of a few lots of Muse wet cat food over concerns they may contain rubber pieces that could present a choking hazard.

According to a statement from the United States Food and Drug Administration, Purina is recalling a limited number of Muse wet cat food Natural Chicken Recipe in Gravy cat food in three-ounce cans.  The recall involves the potential presence of blue and translucent yellow rubber pieces.

As listed on the FDA’s website, Purina states, “The product could contain rubber pieces that are translucent yellow with a blue backing, which may present a potential choking hazard.”

The company also adds, “We’re pet owners and pet lovers, and our number one commitment is the health and well-being of pets.”

The recalled cat food products should be easy to identify as they have a UPC code 38199 17199 along with a production code of 80941162 and best-by (use) date of April 2020. While it is a single lot, the products would have been distributed across the country and available at various pet specialty retailers as well as online.

In a notice, Purina assures, “We became aware of the issue after receiving complaints from pet owners who observed the rubber pieces in the product. We have made changes to our process so this should not happen in the future.”

Fortunately, none of these reports involve injury or illness in cats who may have ingested the products.  Essentially, then, this recall is a voluntary, preventive caution in hopes to catch the problem before it can result in any physical harm.

As with any other recall, consumers are recommended to discard the affected product, if necessary, or return it to place of purchase. Either way, however, the company will replace it.

The Purina notice advises, “You can identify the product by the UPC, production code and ‘Best By’ date on the bottom of the can. If you purchased a variety pack, only the Natural Chicken Recipe in Gravy cans are included in the recall.”

In addition, the Purina PetCare Company is also available by phone at 1.800.982.3855.
